At 102 years old, Iris Apfel is not just a fashion icon, but a force to be reckoned with. This New York native has spent her life defying conventions, turning heads, and inspiring people of all ages to embrace their individuality and have fun with fashion.

With her unmistakable style and infectious energy, Apfel has become synonymous with fearless fashion and self-expression. Recognised for her maximalist style with an Instagram bio proudly exclaiming that “more is more & less is a bore”, the self-proclaimed “geriatric starlet” with snowy white hair is a master of flamboyant and eclectic sartorial choices. Her signature look, a bold mix of colours, patterns, oversized round glasses, and layers of chunky jewellery, has earned her a special place in the hearts of fashion lovers around the world. But Iris’s journey to becoming a style legend began long before she became a household name.

Born in 1921 in Queens, New York, Iris was always drawn to unique styles, even in her early years. At just 12 years old, she would take the train into Manhattan to explore local antique shops, where she developed a love for jewellery and unique accessories. This early fascination with the past laid the foundation for her future as a style icon.

After high school, Apfel studied art history at New York University and attended art school at the University of Wisconsin. But it wasn’t until she began working as a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily and as an interior designer for Elinor Johnson that her true talents began to shine. Her eye for rare items and ability to transform any space with her unique blend of fabrics and design elements set her apart.

In 1948, Apfel married Carl, her late husband, and together they founded Old World Weavers, a textile company known for its sophisticated historical designs and world-travelled aesthetic. Through their business ventures, Iris had the opportunity to work on high-profile projects like the White House under nine presidents from the Kennedys to the Clintons, earning herself the nickname “First Lady of Fabric”, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and with clients such as Estee Lauder and Greta Garbo. Iris became renowned for her ability to infuse any space with her eclectic style and for her love of antique textiles, furniture, and accessories.

But it wasn’t until 2005, at the age of 84, that Apfel’s style truly became recognised on a global scale. A costume exhibition of her jewellery, fantastical clothes, and signature tortoise shell glasses at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, entitled “Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection”, catapulted her into the limelight. Her quirky, witty, and vivacious personality captivated audiences worldwide, and her eclectic style inspired those seeking to break free from fashion norms and embrace their personal style.

Since then, the multiple award winner has continued to defy expectations and push boundaries. In 2012, at age 90, Apfel became a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, sharing her knowledge and passion for the business of fashion. She has collaborated with international brands like MAC Cosmetics, HSN, and H&M, and even launched her own furniture collection. Apfel’s vibrant energy and sharp wit were also captured in the 2015 documentary “Iris”, which provides an intimate look into her life, style philosophy, and the colourful world she inhabits. To top it all off, Mattel honoured her with a Barbie doll version of herself in 2018 in conjunction with the release of her book “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon”, the brand’s highest possible honour. A week before her 102nd birthday, she launched the Erstwilder x Iris Apfel collection of wearable art consisting of bright and bold brooches, necklaces and earrings.

Even as a centenarian, Iris Apfel continues to inspire. In 2021, she made history by signing with the global modelling agency IMG, becoming the oldest professional model at the time. This achievement challenges ageism within the fashion industry and reaffirms that style has no age limit.

Apfel’s success story goes beyond her unique style; it’s a testament to her resilience, passion, and refusal to let age define her. As she once said, “I don’t see anything so wrong with a wrinkle. It’s kind of a badge of courage”. Iris Apfel is a living reminder that age is just a number and that it’s never too late to follow your passions, reinvent yourself, or make a mark on the world. Her extraordinary life and enduring spirit inspire all who believe in the power of individuality and staying true to oneself.

Apfel’s journey also teaches us that success is not limited to youth. In fact, some of the most remarkable achievements can come later in life. As Apfel puts it, “If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows”. As we continue to be inspired by this centenarian powerhouse, we eagerly await to see what she does next.
